I am known in Portugal as a Cao de Aqua, but I am also known as a PWD, Portie, and Portuguese Water Dog.
My full name is Champion Mountainhead's Luxo DeGifford. I was born in Finland on 18 August 2001. I became an AKC Champion on 18 June 2003.

About the Portuguese Water Dog In the United States and Canada we know them as Portuguese Water Dogs, and some of us abbreviate this to PWDs and Porties . But in Portugal, they are called Cao de Agua, which is pronounced Kown-d'Ahgwa. Translated from Portuguese to English Cao translates to dog , de Agua to of water . In Portugal, they are also known as the Portuguese Fishing Dog. The wavy-coated long hair dogs are called Cao de Agua de Pelo Ondulado, and the curly-coated variety is called Cao de Agua de Pelo Encaradolado. In Portugal, the Portuguese Water Dogs were part of the working crew on the fishing trawlers. They would stand guard over the boats, herd the fish into nets, retrieve lost fishing equipment, help save fishermen that had fallen overboard and act as couriers taking messages from ship to ship, and ship to shore. Most of the Portuguese fishermen worked the warm Atlantic waters off Portugal to the chilly fishing waters off Iceland. Portuguese Water Dogs are intelligent, rugged, robust, and love to work in and out of the water. They are exceptional swimmers and divers with great stamina. They need people, thrive as a member of the family and will prove themselves very trustworthy. This energetic humorous dog loves to be the center of attention and will go to great lengths to get it. They won t let you forget that they demand attention and exercise, and they thrive on training and human contact. As an independent thinker, they will regularly voice their opinions. They require weekly grooming because their coat is not fur, but human like hair, non-shedding that grows and needs clipping, brushing and shampooing. The Portuguese Water Dog was admitted to the AKC Miscellaneous Class in June 1981. They were accepted for registration into the AKC stud books in August 1983. They were not eligible to compete in the Working Group until January 1984. Today, the versatility of the Portuguese Water Dog allows it to compete in conformation, obedience, agility, herding, tracking, and water trials. They also excel as companion, service, therapy, and search and rescue dogs. This wonderful breed with its big heart lives to satisfy those that they own, never asking for anything in return -- except maybe a cookie, a hug, or the turkey dinner sitting on the kitchen counter.
